A Smarter, Cleaner Way to Heat and Cool

How a Chiltrix Air-to-Water Heat Pump System Works:
A Chiltrix hydronic heat pump is a little different from a traditional “Air to Air” based unit. The heat pump(s) are located outdoors, but that’s where the similarity begins to fade away. The Chiltrix equipment is hydronic, meaning that indoors it uses heated or cooled water to do its job, the refrigerant (a modern version of “Freon”) is only used in the outdoor unit. The indoor equipment may include any combination of radiant zones, a wide variety of ducted air handlers, ductless fan coil units, and a domestic hot water tank, set up to provide all of the heating, cooling, or domestic water heating needed in the home.

The outdoor unit contains the compressor, condenser, etc. – all of the refrigerant components are in the outdoor unit. The indoor and outdoor equipment are connected to each other by flexible insulated PEX water lines, usually with a buffer tank in between. Not only is the Chiltrix system much more efficient and flexible than a traditional system, the outdoor unit is factory-sealed & tested, and delivered as a fully self-contained appliance ready for connection. 100% of the refrigerant stays outdoors and outside of the building envelope, with no refrigerant ever indoors – an important safety benefit considering the potential hazards associated with today’s refrigerants.

Higher Efficiency. The Chiltrix system holds officially certified world records for efficiency in heating, cooling, and water heating. Air-to-Water systems are inherently more efficient than standard systems. And there is no Air-to-Water Heat Pump in the market with higher efficiency than Chiltrix, in any category. In the summer, it works as a chilled-water system, a miniature version of the systems used in large office buildings for intensive cooling and strong dehumidification. In the winter, the heat pump acts as a compressor-powered boiler, delivering 2–6 times more heat output per unit of energy input (a COP of 2–6) compared to a boiler and delivers heat quite unlike the scorched and dry air that furnaces provide. And all year long, it can make domestic hot water with a DOE-Certified record-setting UEF up to 4.95 and up to 133 gallons First-Hour Ratings.

Higher Reliability. The Chiltrix heat pump outdoor unit is a factory-sealed & tested appliance, the final manufacturing is completed under tightly-controlled conditions before it leaves the factory. There is no opportunity for charging errors, failed compression fittings, leaks from improper soldering, brazing, etc. to occur as a result of on-location installation work. It’s a fact that nearly all standard split-system heat pumps will have a refrigerant leak at some point, that’s not the case with a self-contained Chiltrix air to water heat pump unit.
