Small Server Room Chillers & Free Cooling Option

2-11 Tons cooling

Product Description

Controlling server room temperature & humidity is serious business. That's why many professional IT managers rely on chillers to keep expensive servers and telecom equipment running cool.

Low Ambient Cooling - FC30 w/ Free Cooling option allows indoor cooling all the way down to -50 °F outdoor temperature.

FC30 adds a "free cooling" option to what is already the worlds most efficient chilled water system. The compressor can run slowly or stop when outdoor conditions are colder, saving energy.

24 x 7 Data Center Protection

24 x 7 cooling operation is crucial to the use of sensitive data processing equipment due to the considerable heat produced by electronic devices operating in close proximity to one another. Without reliable cooling, temperatures can quickly rise to levels that cause failure or automatic shutdown of critical equipment, loss of mission-critical data, may leave some or all of the company’s employees without the ability to connect to needed systems, and can destroy expensive hardware.

Designed for cooling small server/computer rooms, indoor growing operations, or other process cooling – with options for all climates from very hot to very cold – a Chiltrix chiller with FC30 option can offer small system performance that exceeds all industry standards by a wide margin, with high reliability, low acquisition cost, and exceptionally low operating costs. Dynamic humidity control available on all models.

The Ultimate Modular Chiller A/C For Small Server Room Cooling. Worlds Record Highest Efficiency Among All Certified Chilled Water Units

  • N+N REDUNDANCY – Regardless of using one, two, or more Chiltrix server room chiller modules for your base cooling requirement, one or more additional modules can be installed to provide low cost fail-over redundancy.
  • HIGH AMBIENT T3 Rated (with CX40/CX65) for outdoor temperatures up to 131F.
  • LOW AMBIENT OPERATION & FREE COOLING – To as low as -50 °F. The Chiltrix FC30 FREE COOLING option includes a second outdoor fan coil, additional variable speed pump, and special valving & controls to allow the server room chiller to harvest free cooling from cold outdoor air at times during the winter, reducing and/or eliminating the need to run the compressor when it’s cold outside. This system allows your full cooling load to be met even if outdoor temperatures are below a temperature that would disable a standard cooling system.
  • DYNAMIC VARIABLE HUMIDITY CONTROL & DEHUMIDIFICATION – The Chiltrix heat pumps can use our patented DHC (Dynamic Humidity Control) to control humidity and increase both efficiency and capacity. Except when the doors are opened frequently, you probably don’t need to worry much about latent heat or humidity control, as your cooling load is nearly 100% derived from a “dry” heat source, i.e. electric resistance heat from equipment components. Typical server room air cooling always tries to remove humidity, continuous cooling in a server room environment often lowers the humidity far more than is desirable. By lowering the amount of dehumidification performed by the server room chiller you can increase cooling capacity and save on energy usage, while at the same time maintaining proper ASHRAE A-1 levels of temperature and humidity. Note, a server room should ideally be at 50-60% relative humidity. Lower humidity means the risk of static discharge is greater, and wasted energy. Most server rooms suffer from humidity far lower than recommended. Many server room operators are forced to run humidifiers to control humidity. A correct (not too low, not too high) humidity is best and will result in lower core temperatures in the equipment, lower cooling costs, and safer operation. See HP’s ASHRAE A1 recommended server room temperature and humidity document page 4 for the psychrometric chart.
  • VARIABLE CAPACITY DC-Inverter variable speed compressor and pump match the chiller performance to the actual cooling load. A server room cooling load varies widely depending on activity. For example, an idling CPU generates as few as 100 BTU/h while at full frequency the same CPU can generate 1,200 Btu/h or more, the cooling load varies throughout the day. After business hours, the cooling load generally drops by a wide margin, but with spikes as scheduled tasks, backups etc. are performed. The fully variable capacity Chiltrix units are always exactly the right size system for the immediate cooling load.
  • Anti-Corrosion Seaspray technology is used on all outdoor units to protect against salt air in coastal environments. See anti-corrosion heat pump details.
  • MODBUS Interface. Connect, control, and monitor via RS485 if needed.
Psychrologix Controller
Psychrologix™ Controller DHC (Dynamic Humidity Control) function is designed to dynamically control humidity and operate the chiller above its already high efficiency rating. DHC prevents over-dehumidification, overly dry air (which increases static discharge) and prevents wasted energy. See DHC Details. Dynamic Humidity Control is a patented technology only available from Chiltrix.

Free Cooling Option

Low Ambient Cooling

The Chiltrix FC30 Server Room Free-Cooling Edition adds a “free cooling” option to what is already the worlds most efficient chilled water system.

Server rooms need cooling all year, even when it is cold outside. If you operate in a northern area with cold winters, this option may be more than an energy savings approach, it may be an absolute requirement for you. Standard heat pumps and chillers can run in cooling mode down to around 0 °F before they must stop. With the FC30, the low end is extended to -50 °F.

Here’s how the special FC30 unit works:

When outdoor temperatures drop, the CX unit glycol-water loop is automatically pre-cooled using a special water-to-air heat exchanger to harvest outdoor cold ambient conditions. This cools the glycol-water loop so that the CX unit variable speed compressor can drop to a lower speed and consume less power. This can save by reducing the already low power consumption, without lowering capacity.

At colder ambient, for example at 36 °F outdoor temperature, a CX chiller with FC30 can deliver 24,000 Btu/h without running the compressor. And it can meet a 42,000 Btu/h load with the compressor off at 25 °F outdoor temperature. The FC30 units operate to as low as -50 °F.

Enjoy the savings of free cooling for the cost of running a fan and a pump, and without any worry that it might get too cold for your current cooling system to run.

Supports Liquid or Fan Coil Cooling

Chiltrix server room chiller configurations support in-rack, direct-to-chip,  immersion, and all forms of liquid cooling. Chiltrix also offers a wide range of ducted or wall/ceiling-mounted ductless fan coil cooling units suitable for server rooms.

Is Free-Cooling Really Free?

So even when the compressor is off, there is still some power consumption from pumps and the fan. But depending on outdoor temperature, the compressor may be running slowly at reduced power draw or may be off, and so at least part of the cooling is free. What’s more, the entire FC30 system, including the added value of the low ambient cooling capability, may be free in the sense that in some applications, the extra cost of the FC30 hardware can be recovered in as few as one winter season.
